Legislative Agenda

The Legislative Agenda for 2008 reflects the current concerns and needs of our local government members and was approved
by the membership on January 23, 2008.  As the legislative season progresses, additional specific bills and/or issues may be added to the agenda.

The specific issues outlined in the Legislative Agenda are in keeping with the basic legislative tenets of the MCCG, which are the following:

-Support legislation granting additional permissive authority for counties, townships, and municipalities;

-Support legislation allowing counties, townships, and both home rule and non-home rule municipalities to expand non-property tax

revenue sources;

-Oppose unfunded mandates imposed by the state or federal government;

-Oppose legislation that would reduce the existing authority of county, township, or municipal government;

-Oppose proposals that erode the existing county, township, or municipal revenue base; and

-Support legislation upholding local and regional land planning and zoning authority.

In addition to the basic tenets and specific legislative agenda, the MCCG strives to do the following:

  • Energize our electorate through education and communications programs to help them express their views to their elected state representatives
  • Promote more legislative involvement and lobbying by MCCG member mayors and presidents
